Federal Firearms License (FFL) Types

Dealers:

01 – Dealer in firearms other than destructive devices.

  • This is the most common type of FFL. Type 01 FFL’s can buy and sell regular firearms and conduct gunsmithing activities.

02 – Pawnbroker in firearms other than destructive devices.

  • A Type 02 FFL is similar to a Type 01 FFL, but it also allows for pawnbroker activities.

09 – Dealer in destructive devices.

  • A Type 09 FFL’s is similar to a Type 01 FFL, but it also allows the FFL to buy and sell destructive devices and armor piercing ammunition.

Manufacturers:

06 – Manufacturer of Ammunition for Firearms Other Than Ammunition for Destructive Devices or Armor Piercing Ammunition.

  • Type 06 FFLs are only for manufacturers of ammunition. Type 06 FFLs cannot buy and sell firearms or armor piercing ammunition.

07 – Manufacturer of firearms other than destructive devices.

  • A Type 07 FFL is the second most common type of FFL. A Type 07 FFL is similar to a Type 01 FFL, but it also allows the FFL to manufacture firearms.

10 – Manufacturer of destructive devices, ammunition for destructive devices or armor piercing ammunition.

  • A Type 10 FFL is is similar to a Type 07 FFL, but it also allows the FFL to manufacture destructive devices and armor piercing ammunition.

Importers:

08 – Importer of firearms or ammunition for firearms other than destructive devices or ammunition other than armor piercing ammunition.

  • A Type 08 FFL is similar to a Type 01 FFL, but can also import firearms and non armor piercing ammunition into the United States.

11 – Importer of destructive devices, ammunition for destructive devices or armor piercing ammunition

  • A Type 11 FFL is similar to a Type 10 FFL, but can also import destructive devices and armor piercing ammunition.

Other:

03 – Collector of curios and relics.

  • Type 03 FFLs are only for collectors of curio and relic firearms. A Type 03 FFL cannot buy and sell firearms, destructive devices, or armor piercing ammunition.

SOT

An FFL that wants to also buy, sell, manufacture, or import NFA (Title II) items must apply for and become an SOT. There are three different types of SOT and the SOT must go along with your FFL Type.

  • Class 1 SOT (importer)

    • can buy, sell, and import NFA items

  • Class 2 SOT (manufacturer)

    • can buy, sell, and manufacture NFA items

  • Clas 3 SOT (dealer)

    • can buy and sell NFA items
